The Lincoln Academy of Illinois

In honor of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are highlighting some of our Asian American and Pacific Islander Lincoln Laureates. Steven Shih Chen was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan until the age of 15 when his family immigrated to the United States.

An alumnus of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) Official Site, Chen was the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of YouTube. In 1999, Steve arrived in Silicon Valley to join PayPal after studying Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. On his first day at PayPal, Steve met Chad Hurley, who would later become his YouTube co-founder.

Steve was instrumental in building YouTube into a viral video phenomenon. He helped lead YouTube through the Google acquisition for $1.65 billion, less than a year after launching the site. As the key technologist, Steve developed the company’s massive data centers and helped build YouTube into a premier entertainment destination, and one of the most popular websites on the Internet today.

Steve has received several prestigious honors and acknowledgments from the business and entertainment communities including: Business 2.0’s “50 Most Influential People,” GQ’s “Men of the Year,” Time magazine’s “Best Invention of the Year”, and Fortune’s “Most Powerful People in Business.”

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois

Today's Student Laureate Spotlight features Louwallien Krupa from National Louis University. Krupa is a senior working towards her culinary degree at the Kendall College of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management.

A single mother, Krupa moved to the U.S. from the Philippines without an understanding of the English language. Despite that, she has been able to put herself through college and support her daughter while also working full-time as line/banquet cook at the Butterfield Country Club.

She has devotes her time and energy to help those who are less fortunate than her family by volunteering at orphanages, donating school supplies, and helping families after tragedies by providing meals and clothing. The importance of giving back to others and your community is something that she hopes to instill in her children.
